better bus service for Covington

Covington isn’t well served by mass transit, and the region’s failure to fund TANK adequately demands a broader effort than Covington can muster on its own. But Covington is the urban core of Northern Kentucky, and our residents make up a corresponding proportion of TANK riders. So COVstreets is committed to leveraging that ridership to advocate for mass transit that serves the needs of Covington residents in every neighborhood, and to support bus transit stop-by-stop on Covington streets.

opportunities

TANK only serves Covington neighborhoods north of Interstate 275, so connecting the rest of the city to mass transit is the first priority. Every neighborhood in the largest city in northern Kentucky should have ready access to mass transit, full stop.

Apart from funding shortfalls that limit TANK’s reach, what can the city do to improve mass transit service? Although TANK maintains bus stops, the city can improve nearby sidewalk and crosswalk infrastructure. And city staff are best positioned to survey residents and then to map and give special attention to the routes riders use to reach TANK services. COVstreets is prepared to step in for such rider surveys if necessary.

solutions

Improve city-side mass transit support:

  • maintain and improve sidewalks and crosswalks near bus stops

  • map and maintain high-traffic pedestrian routes to TANK lines

Advocate for better regional mass transit:

  • survey Covington-originating ridership and press TANK to serve those who comprise a significant proportion of its customers

  • assess the economic impact of Covington riders and employers and argue that TANK service reflect those realities
